Assignment 1- Mrs Perez A Closer Look
Shared Reading Segment
• During her explicit phonics lesson, how does Ms. Perez support students' problem-solving skills? Based on what you saw in the video, what are the different ways that shared reading can be used to promote literacy?
Mrs Perez support students problem solving skills by creating a phonics lesson drawn from the Hot Dog poem she has the class read aloud. She breaks down words to help children decipher and sound out the word sounds. She creates new words and allows the children to sound out the word and see the association with the new letters introduced to make new words. Mrs Perez promotes literacy by using the following: site words, high frequency words, word association with vowel sounds and maintaining a word wall
Why does she think it's important for students to verbalize their strategies? What else do you notice about how she helps students build meaning in text? Ms. Perez thinks its important to verbalize strategies to aid in comprehension of what they read. She uses a "balanced cueing system" to help students verbalize their strategies.
Diferentiated Instruction
How does Ms. Perez organize her classroom to support a wide range of learners? how Ms. Perez sets up her classroom by having students choose activities of their choice from a board and working together in groups. Then she works with a group of students that are struggling while other students are engaged in different activities.
•How are reading and writing connected in classroom activities?
Mrs Perez creates a writing extension from the book the students have read, such as answering questions or fill ins. Having this connection with reading and writing helps students with comprehension and reading skills.

The class profile can be used to help group students and differentiate instruction by keeping a record of the strengths and weaknesses of each student. This allows her to create individualized plans of improving the students performance in weak areas.

Assignment 3
After reviewing the sample lesson plan I think that it correlates with common core standards. The lesson also is very comprehensive and incorporates extensive methods to ensure students understand the lesson and keep them engaged. The lesson also helps to build vocabulary and uses gradual release of responsibility method. The lesson has stated student objectives but missing the essential questions. I think there should be more technology implemented in the lesson to encourage inquiry based learning. Although, The lesson invites students to be involved in the learning process by choosing a reading selection that interest them, the students should do more on their own in the learning process. The positive aspects of the lesson is that it encourages student participation which keeps students engaged in the lesson and interest in learning the lesson as well.
Assignment 2
After watching the video I learned that there are several components needed to be successful in teaching and learning reading. The video reveals several ways on how to keep students engaged and understanding what they are reading and how to become better readers. I think the video is very informative in describing various reading practices and showing reading skills needed to help students with reading. I like the various reading strategies used to help build vocabulary, understanding and reading levels. Some of the strategies mentioned are the following: Read aloud, guided reading and shared reading. I like the reading practices as it encourages independent learning with the teacher serving the role as the facilitator. I like the incorporation of writing activities as it helps to build reading skills for the students. I learned using the gradual release of responsibility strategy is key in encouraging students to be independent readers and learners. Overall the video provides effective reading methods that are effective in reading development and learning.
